‘It is a fear that we won’t survive the construction,’ Hamburger Mary’s struggles amid downtown construction project

TOLEDO, Ohio — Since August, the corner of Madison Avenue and Huron Street in downtown Toledo has been a construction zone, part of the Lucas County Land Bank’s $190 million Four Corners Project. The project is transforming the historic Spitzer and Nicholas Buildings from office spaces into 400 new apartments, featuring ground-level retail.

However, for one nearby restaurant, the redevelopment has brought challenges. Hamburger Mary’s co-owner Thea Grabiec says access to her business has been limited, parking is scarce, and customer traffic has dropped significantly.

“We just want to make sure that people want to come here and that they can come here and that they can access it and they can feel safe leaving here,” Grabiec said…
