On the World Day of Remembrance for Road Traffic Victims, the City of Toledo, the Toledo-Lucas County Health Department, and the YMCA of Greater Toledo presented an art installation in Ottawa Park. The display, near the Kenwood Boulevard entrance, shows 122 flags. Each flag represents a person who died in a traffic incident in the past three years. This project is part of Toledo’s Vision Zero campaign, which seeks to eliminate traffic deaths and serious injuries and promote safer mobility.
In 2024, Lucas County reported 11,415 vehicle crashes. These crashes led to 35 deaths and 210 serious injuries. On average, 32 Toledo residents die in traffic incidents each year. City officials state that most of these deaths are preventable. Mayor Wade Kapszukiewicz said the installation serves as a reminder of the lives lost and the city’s focus on street safety.
