Physicians encourage conversations on obstructive sleep apnea

TOLEDO, Ohio — Obstructive sleep apnea, a disorder long associated with older or overweight adults, is increasingly being recognized in patients of all ages and body types, according to sleep medicine specialists at ProMedica.

Dr. Kathryn Williams, a physician specializing in sleep and pulmonary medicine, said many people still misunderstand who is at risk for the condition, which causes the throat to collapse during sleep and repeatedly interrupts breathing.

“About 25 percent or maybe even more are not overweight,” Dr. Williams said. “You may not fit the mold of what you think obstructive sleep apnea is, but you should be evaluated if you’re not getting good sleep.”…
