TOLEDO, Ohio — State Sen. Paula Hicks-Hudson (D, Toledo) said the financial crisis unfolding inside Toledo Public Schools is not just a local problem. Instead, she said, it’s the result of years of state-level decisions that have shifted more costs onto districts and taxpayers.
Her comments come as TPS leaders warn the district may need to eliminate about 100 teaching positions, close elementary schools and possibly move to a four-day week to address a financial shortfall.
“I do think that they’ve been trying to manage their revenue and things like that,” Hicks-Hudson said. “But this is, unfortunately, I think, the result of the continuing assault by the legislature on public education.”…
