An Unhoused Blue Christmas remembers unhoused Toledoans who died this year

TOLEDO, Ohio (WTVG) – An Unhoused Blue Christmas is an annual service to remember members of the unhoused community who have died in Toledo this year. This year, organizers honored more than two dozen people.

The service is always held on Dec. 21, the shortest and darkest day of the year. Calling the memorial a “Blue Christmas” is also a reminder that the holiday season may be less festive and more difficult for those who are grieving.

“In our case, it’s an opportunity to honor and remember those from the unhoused community who are a part of our lives, who are our neighbors, and a chance for us to say ‘I love you’ and share in our collective grief together,” said Pastor Leo Cunningham, lead pastor at St. Paul’s United Methodist Church…
