Monroe County students to learn gun accident prevention through ‘Eddie Eagle’ program

MONROE COUNTY, Michigan — Students in Monroe County will learn gun accident prevention through a safety program coming to the county’s schools.

According to a press release, the Monroe County Sheriff’s Office will join local law enforcement and the D.A.R.E. board in promoting safety throughout the county’s nine schools.

The program is called the “Eddie Eagle GunSafe” program. Its title references the program’s mascot, who teaches children what to do if they see a firearm. The program has existed for more than 30 years, and was created by educators, school administrators, National Rifle Association firearm safety experts and more. It teaches children to do the following if they ever come across a gun: “Stop! Don’t touch. Run away. Tell a grown-up.”…
