Grocery chain aims to expanding food access to those in need through discount

TOLEDO, Ohio — Families in the area may be struggling with high grocery bills at the end of a shopping trip. This pain can be especially hard for families using government assistance, like WIC, SNAP, Medicaid and more, as those high prices eat into their limited monthly funds. It’s possibly why families to choose cheap, sugar filled, “convenient” foods instead of purchasing the more expensive, healthier options.

In an effort to help connect families to fresh fruits and vegetables, Kroger is introducing its Verified Savings Program. Those who qualify for government assistance will receive additional 20% discount on fresh fruits and vegetables. This can be a major help for families with kids who are picky eaters or those who prefer the more expensive fruits. Also, this could potentially help avoid wasting funds when looking to try something new or different with produce, since it spoils quicker than canned fruits and vegetables.

The Verified Savings Program discount is applied to any shopper’s Kroger Plus Member account when they apply for the program online.
