Local nonprofit founder honored with 2026 Ohio MLK Award

COLUMBUS, Ohio (WTVG) – A local man has been announced as a winner in the 2026 Ohio MLK Awards. Governor Mike DeWine and the Ohio Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Holiday Commission announced the winners on Wednesday.

DeWine’s office says the awards honor Ohioans who exemplify Dr. King’s teachings of peace, dignity and non-violent social change.

Robert L. Smith of Toledo was awarded the Ohio Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Governor’s Humanitarian Award, which honors “quiet soldiers who promote the welfare of humanity and the elimination of pain and suffering through their own selfless service, often without recognition,” according to the governor’s office…
