TOLEDO, Ohio — The Toledo Zoo has reached new heights this week, quite literally, with the birth of a soon-to-be towering new addition to its reticulated giraffe herd.

Eugene, a 130-pound male calf, arrived Saturday, Jan. 17, following a lengthy 15-month gestation period.

The zoo said in a post on Facebook that the newcomer is already making big strides, passing his neonatal health exams with flying colors. The birth marks the first calf for mother Lily and the second for father Rocket, whose first calf, Franklin, was born in 2023…
