‘The day that ends the sadness’: Mom of 5 receives home through Women Build

Tamia Spears paid rent and utility bills for years, oftentimes with grocery money, while relying on hand-me-downs to keep her children clothed.

For the past year and a half, the single mother of five juggled a full-time job with volunteering 15 to 20 hours a month as a salesman at a South Toledo thrift store and helping build homes for would-be first-time homeowners.

On Tuesday, Ms. Spears received the keys to one such home. It was built through Women Build — a Maumee Valley Habitat for Humanity project…
