Habitat for Humanity changed a young mother’s life

PORT CLINTON – Nikki Weatherwax was living comfortably with her young daughter in a rented home in Oak Harbor when the owner of the house died unexpectedly. Weatherwax was a young, single mother facing an unknown future, but she found hope when she began applying to become a Habitat for Humanity homeowner.

Weatherwax and her daughter, Bailey Kirkendall, who is now a kindergartener, lived with Weatherwax’s parents during the application and homebuilding process. She was chosen to become a Habitat homeowner by Habitat for Humanity of Ottawa County, and she and Bailey moved into their new home in Port Clinton in February, 2022.

Weatherwax’s application stood out because of her strong financial acumen. Before it closed, Weatherwax made a living by partnering with Village Creations, where she sold merchandise. She kept detailed financial records of her business…
