Man who alleged police harassment pleads to misdemeanor

An Indiana man whose lawyer alleged police were harassing him because of his murder acquittal in late 2023 pleaded guilty Monday morning to a misdemeanor to resolve a case arising from a traffic stop.

Vontae Garrett, whose cause had been taken up by a statewide gun rights organization after a sheriff’s deputy charged him with improper handling of a firearm in a vehicle, conceded in Lucas County Common Pleas Court that he did not promptly return to the prior owner the license plates that were on a car he bought.

Judge Gary Cook accepted Mr. Garrett’s guilty plea to attempted receiving stolen property, a first-degree misdemeanor, and sentenced him to time served — two days in jail — and one year of probation. The probation will be terminated immediately once Mr. Garrett pays court costs and $12 in restitution to the car seller, the judge ordered…
