Library adds portrait painted by early Toledo artist

She wears a white bonnet and dark dress, posing with a reserved demeanor, but a slight smile flickers across her face as she looks out at the crowd.

Agatha Kuyck, the mother of artist William H. Machen, is immortalized in his painting that was donated on Tuesday to the Toledo Lucas County Public Library.

The portrait was acquired from Josephine Cotterman, a direct descendant of Mr. Machen, who lived from 1832 until 1911. The painting now hangs in a glass display case alongside Mr. Machen’s other works and objects in the local history department at the Main Library…
