Rob Allen gave a opinion letter to the editor on March 9, and it had some inaccuracies that I would like to address, regarding the Interurban Bridge (aka Roche de Boeuf Bridge). I have been working on this with Waterville for over a year so I have the facts.
First off the statement “… a group of people who want local and even state or federal taxpayer dollars to rehab, rebuild, or replace the bridge” is not true. We have no desire to replace this historic bridge, which would destroy its significance. And we want to reduce taxpayer dollars. We have run the numbers and it will take less taxpayer dollars to structurally support the spandrel walls of this iconic structure and make it safe than the ODOT cost estimate to tear this bridge down. So, we are advocating for saving tax dollars, while ODOT is advocating wasting them.
