Vietnam veteran warns against escalation as debate grows over U.S. troop deployment in Iran

TOLEDO, Ohio — As the war in Iran enters its fifth week, concerns are mounting over the possibility of U.S. ground troops being deployed, with some veterans urging caution and warning against repeating past mistakes.

Amid ongoing discussions in Washington about sending additional forces, Navy veteran Mike Ferner, a former Toledo city councilman and mayoral candidate, said his experiences during the Vietnam War — and later caring for wounded service members — shape his opposition to further military involvement.

“The war in Vietnam was based on lies, and that’s no secret anymore,” said Ferner. “And what we’ve seen is that the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan and now Iran — same thing. They’re based on lies.”…
