Judge gives head of ‘small cult’ that brutally beat man 22 years in prison

Horrific abuse a Toledo woman suffered as a child did not justify the beatings she then orchestrated for a man in her polyamorous household, a judge said Thursday before imposing a 22-year prison term.

Martina Esqueda, 29, apologized profusely to the victim and his family in Lucas County Common Pleas Court after Morgan Isenberg, one of her lawyers, described a life in which she was sexually abused and had “no guidance, … nobody to love her” while growing up and consequently “made a lot of wrong choices.”

But Judge Lori Olender said Esqueda “took all that trauma … and threw it against somebody else, put them in the same position you were in,” and that justified a severe — though not quite maximum — sentence…
