5 men exonerated in Toledo murder case sue city, state over wrongful imprisonment

TOLEDO, Ohio — Five men who spent decades in prison for the murder of a Toledo man in 1992 are suing the state, the city of Toledo and multiple former detectives and police officers, saying they were wrongfully imprisoned.

Vernon Huggins was found beaten to death inside Wilson Park on Aug. 4, 1992. Eric Misch, Joseph Rickard, Louie Costilla, and Mel and Lorenzo Vasquez were convicted in the case and sent to prison in 1993.

But when additional evidence was produced in 2024, Misch was granted a new trial and prosecutors dismissed his case. The same happened in January of 2025 for the other men…
