Memorial Day Morsels: Hosting for the holiday with Smokey’s BBQ

Courtney and Nick Sauceda think of burgers on the grill, mac and cheese, and potato salad when Memorial Day comes to mind.

The pair opened Smokey’s BBQ in Oregon in February, a place that was once a Ponderosa Steakhouse and most recently Smokey’s Barbecue Roadhouse. They moved from Houston back to Nick’s hometown of Toledo to be closer to family; the decade spent in Houston working in some of the best restaurants shines in the food at Smokey’s.

“We think of our brisket burger,” Courtney, a Houston native, said of Memorial Day food. “These are just classics that always hit, like a burger with mac and cheese or like a burger and fries.”…
