1906 – Fire destroys Globe railroad shops
A fire destroyed the roundhouse and car shops of the Gila Valley, Globe and Northern Railroad in Globe, Arizona. The loss underscored the railroad’s importance to the mining economy of the early Arizona Territory.
1935 – Steinfeld’s holds a Tucson open house
Tucson’s Steinfeld’s Department Store held an open house after remodeling. The event reflected the importance of the longtime retailer to Tucson’s commercial life during the Depression era.
2010 – Tornado outbreak strikes northern Arizona
At least 11 tornadoes struck northern Arizona on October 6, including an EF-2 track that stretched roughly 34 miles. The National Weather Service describes it as Arizona’s largest tornado outbreak and the highest-count tornado event recorded west of the Continental Divide.

1777 – British forces capture Forts Clinton and Montgomery
During the American Revolution, British forces captured Fort Clinton and Fort Montgomery on the Hudson River in New York. The action helped secure British control of a strategically important stretch of the river.
1866 – Train robbery takes place near Seymour, Indiana
Masked thieves boarded an Ohio & Mississippi Railroad passenger train near Seymour and robbed an Adams Express car. The Library of Congress identifies the incident as considered the first train robbery, while noting an earlier train burglary.
1884 – U.S. Naval War College is established
Navy Department General Order No. 325 established the U.S. Naval War College at Newport, Rhode Island, with Commodore Stephen B. Luce as its first president. The institution became a leading center for advanced professional military education.
1973 – Yom Kippur War begins
Egypt and Syria launched coordinated attacks against Israeli forces in the Sinai Peninsula and Golan Heights. The war became a major turning point in U.S. Middle East policy and contributed to the diplomatic process that led to the 1979 Egyptian-Israeli peace treaty.

1981 – Solar Mesosphere Explorer launches
NASA launched the Solar Mesosphere Explorer from Vandenberg Air Force Base to study atmospheric constituents between roughly 19 and 50 miles above Earth, including processes affecting ozone.
Space shuttle Discovery launched the Ulysses spacecraft, beginning a mission to study the previously unexplored polar regions of the Sun. The spacecraft later used a Jupiter gravity assist to enter an orbit passing over the Sun’s poles.

2010 – WMAP completes satellite operations
