Arizona Proposition 319 would prohibit new photo traffic enforcement cameras

TUCSON, Ariz. (13 News) – Arizona voters will decide whether to prohibit cities and counties from installing new speed and red-light cameras starting next year.

Proposition 319 would ban new photo traffic enforcement systems while creating regulations for existing setups across the state. Under the measure, cities with active cameras by the end of the year could temporarily keep them, but those municipalities would have to seek voter approval in the next general election. If approved, the measure would require a renewal vote every 10 years; if rejected, cities would have 90 days to remove the cameras.

Tucson voters banned photo radar cameras in 2015. However, the Tucson City Council met this summer to discuss the possibility of reinstating them in response to a rise in traffic fatalities. Proposition 319 would make that process more complicated.
