University of Arizona shooting suspect charged with first-degree murder

Police officials addressed the growing issue of gun violence on school campuses and provided more details about Sunday’s fatal shooting on the University of Arizona campus at a press conference Thursday.

UA Police Chief Chris Olson spoke about the challenges of maintaining an open campus. While the campus should remain accessible to the community, carrying a firearm is against the student code of conduct.

“But when we talk about, how do you protect the campus, you start with high visibility enforcement, but then you take a whole community approach. We have to get our community more involved to reporting suspicious activity,” he said at the press conference.

Officials also revealed more details about the homicide investigation.

Ryan Romero-Encinas, 20, faces first-degree murder charges in the fatal shooting of Minhaj Jamshidi, a Pima Community College student, near the UA campus volleyball courts.
