TUCSON, Ariz. (13 News) – Construction officially began on a nearly $8 million revitalization project at Santa Rita Park, marking a significant milestone since the project’s approval under Proposition 407 in 2018. City officials and community members gathered for a groundbreaking ceremony at the park at E. 21st Street and S. 3rd Avenue, where fencing has already been installed, closing the park to the public.
“This investment is an investment in a sense of community for the residents, the ability to walk to your neighborhood park and enjoy a splash pad, to watch a sports game, to play on a new playground,” said Lara Hamwey, City of Tucson Parks and Recreation Director. “It’s going to give the neighbors an ability to connect and a retaking of their park in a way that they’ve not been able to use it previously.”
The extensive renovation includes construction of a new splash pad, playground equipment, walking paths, and the planting of over 300 trees and shrubs. Additionally, 3rd Avenue between 21st and 22nd Streets will be permanently closed to traffic and incorporated into the park space…
