Tragedy struck southwest of Tucson when a small plane crashed in a remote area, claiming the lives of both occupants. The Pima County Sheriff’s Department (PCSD) has identified the victims as 41-year-old Miguel Ornelas, the student pilot and owner of the plane, and 74-year-old Robert Guerrero, the flight instructor, ABC15 reported.
The crash occurred just after 2:30 p.m. on Thursday, and was soon followed by a response from PCSD’s Search and Rescue and Traffic Unit, upon being informed by the United States Airforce of a plane that had departed from Ryan Airfield and subsequently failed to return. Despite the challenging terrain and remote location of the crash site on state trust land, a helicopter managed to locate the downed Cessna A150, “destroyed” as described by investigators, and the lack of survivors was confirmed. “The PCSD Traffic Unit is now assisting the Federal Aviation Administration and the National Transportation Safety Board with their investigation of this crash,” Kevin Adger of the PCSD, communicated this development FOX 10 Phoenix.
