Lawsuit alleges free speech violations in student suspension at Arizona high school

MARANA, Ariz. — A federal lawsuit claims that the Marana Unified School District violated a student’s First Amendment rights. A Marana High School student is at the center of the case after he allegedly received a 45-day suspension for an email he never sent.

Parents of the male student, who is a minor, filed the lawsuit. The teenager wrote an email to his English teacher with his mother on Oct. 9 of last year, according to the filing. The boy was a sophomore at the time.

The draft email contained jokes before the student typed, “GANG GANG GIMME A BETTER GRADE OR I SHOOT UP DA SKOOL HOMIE,” the lawsuit said…
