TUCSON, AZ (September 8, 2025) — Tucson drivers should prepare for an I-10 overhaul and significant traffic changes as the Arizona Department of Transportation (ADOT) begins a $600 million reconstruction of Interstate 10 between Kino Parkway and Country Club Road. The multi-year project, launched earlier this summer, will add lanes, replace aging interchanges, and improve safety on one of Southern Arizona’s busiest freeway corridors.
Year-Long Closure at Country Club Road
Starting Monday, September 8 at 8 p.m., Country Club Road will close at I-10 for approximately one year, with reopening scheduled for Summer 2026. The closure will allow crews to relocate underground utilities and build new bridges as part of a redesigned interchange at Country Club Road.
During the closure, Country Club Road will remain open to local traffic only between Irvington Road and Michigan Street, but no vehicles will be able to pass beneath I-10.
Ramp Closures and Openings
The widening project also brings changes to freeway access:
- Saturday, September 6 at 8 p.m.: The westbound I-10 on-ramp at Irvington Road will close permanently. Drivers will be redirected to the Palo Verde Road on-ramp.
- Sunday, September 7 at 7 a.m.: A new westbound on-ramp at Alvernon Road will open, providing an additional access point to I-10.
What the Project Includes
According to ADOT, the reconstruction effort will:
- Widen I-10 to three lanes in each direction with auxiliary lanes between Kino Parkway and Alvernon Way.
- Reconstruct the Kino Parkway interchange.
- Construct a new Country Club Road interchange to replace Palo Verde Road.
- Remove the existing Palo Verde Road interchange.
- Build a new westbound on-ramp at Alvernon Way.
- Add an I-10 undercrossing to connect the north and south sides of the Kino Sports Complex.
Timeline and Impacts
ADOT has pledged to maintain at least two lanes of traffic in each direction during peak hours and ensure access to nearby businesses. Construction is expected to last until 2028, with the Country Club Road closure lasting through summer 2026.…
