October 2025: Updates on Major Tucson Road Projects Impacting Local Residents

The Department of Transportation and Mobility in Tucson is working on several infrastructure projects as of October 2025. These projects aim to improve safety, efficiency, and accessibility for residents who walk, bike, drive, or use public transit. The department has released updates on the status of these projects, outlining recent progress and upcoming work.

The Downtown Links Improvement Project began in August 2020. It connects Barraza Aviation Parkway to St. Mary’s Road and is divided into two main segments. The eastern segment, from Barraza Aviation Parkway at Broadway to Sixth Street, was finished in February 2023. The project includes surface improvements and underground work, such as a box culvert for flood control, a new overpass at Sixth Avenue, and an underpass at Sixth Street to remove a railroad crossing. The current phase involves building an underpass at the Union Pacific Railroad. This requires coordination with the railroad and a fiber optic utility company. The project is expected to finish in early 2026.

The Valencia Road widening project started in November 2024. It covers four miles and will expand Valencia Road to six lanes. The project also includes drainage improvements, new bicycle and pedestrian facilities, and upgraded traffic signals. Since July 2025, work has focused on the south side of Valencia Road. This includes underground infrastructure, electrical work, landscaping, and preparing the road for paving. The project is part of the Regional Transportation Authority Plan and is scheduled to finish in summer 2026.
