Brian Bromberg is back with another beautiful live moment from his acoustic trio. This time he brings his upright bass to the forefront on a warm and spirited take of Autumn Leaves. The performance was captured at the Century Room in Tucson with Tom Zink on piano and Charles Ruggiero on drums.
Bromberg’s upright tone is rich and vocal and he moves through the tune with the kind of ease that comes from decades of finding new life in classic material. The trio leans into the melody and opens it up in all the right places. Zink’s touch is light and lyrical and Ruggiero shapes the energy with an intuitive sense of space and swing.
It is a relaxed setting that puts the focus exactly where it should be on the conversation between three musicians who know how to listen. Its also worth mentioning that even though this is alive performance, the audio capture and mix is top notch, Brian always inspires me to want to grab an upright and get to work…
