Firefighters will be let go as Rural Metro takes over South Tucson fire response

TUCSON, Ariz. (13 News) – We are learning more about a change to the South Tucson Fire Department as Rural Metro prepares to take over operations at the end of the month.

While the initial report from the city of South Tucson said the agreement with Rural Metro would not replace or eliminate the STFD, it does not include the 30 firefighters working there now. Their contracts will officially be terminated at the end of the month.

“Nobody knew anything. One day, I walk into my shift, we have a memo sitting on the table saying that Rural Metro will be here on Feb. 1, and our last day is Jan. 31,” said a South Tucson firefighter, who wished to remain anonymous…
