TULSA, Okla. – St. Monica Catholic Church, a historically African American church in North Tulsa, celebrated its centennial on Oct. 18.
According to church staff, the church first operated out of a high school in downtown Tulsa when it began in 1926. It moved locations for several years before its church building was built on Marshall Place near Greenwood Avenue in 1946. The congregation has called that location home since then.
Centennial Excitement
Pastor Celestine Obidiegwu said there was a lot of the excitement for the centennial celebration.
“We are filled with so much joy because we are celebrating our centennial today,” said Pastor Obidiegwu. “It’s a great, wonderful day for us, turning 100 years. It’s not like turning 10 or 15 or 20 or 25 years. It’s amazing.”…
