Catoosa Police calling on the community to rally behind officer battling cancer

CATOOSA, Okla. — Catoosa police are calling for the community to help one of their own who’s battling cancer.

Captain Jennifer Swarer, who has worked with the department for 15 years, has been diagnosed with stage 4 pancreatic cancer and doctors say its extremely aggressive.

Assistant chief of Catoosa police, Andrew Wimberley, says the diagnosis has impacted the whole department.

“We were all just kind of shocked like I said she’s a strong and independent woman she’s integral to the running of this police department,” Wimberley said.

Wimberley says Swarer is a single mom, incredibly brave and is fighting the cancer like she fights crime, head on.

“She’s known now how bad it is for the last week or so and she’s come in here smiling and laughing and joking just like she always does. We all kind of stand around in awe of her courage,” Wimberley said. “There’s been some hugging and there’s been some crying. She stood up man, she stayed positive. She was down initially at first and I told her this is just like the job. We’re in it to go home at the end of the shift and we’re going to win the fight.”
