DA recommends death penalty for woman charged with killing 4-year-old

The district attorney of Caddo County has motioned for the consideration of the death penalty in the case of Alysia Adams, the caregiver accused in the tragic death of 4-year-old Athena Brownfield.

In a recent court filing, District Attorney Jason Hicks advocated for the ultimate punishment, stating that Adams “should be punished by death” for the alleged murder of the young Cyril girl. Hicks also highlighted the “especially heinous, atrocious, or cruel” nature of Brownfield’s death.

Brownfield was reported missing on Jan. 10, 2023, after a mail carrier discovered her 5-year-old sister outside their residence. Subsequently, the remains of the 4-year-old were located in rural Grady County. Alysia and Ivon Adams, her two caregivers, were promptly arrested following Brownfield’s disappearance.

Currently incarcerated in Grady County Jail, Adams faces charges of first-degree murder, obstructing an officer, and child neglect as the case awaits trial.

According to a medical examiner’s report, Brownfield’s cause of death was acute pneumonia complicated by malnutrition, classified as a homicide. The report revealed that Brownfield weighed a mere 23 pounds at the time of her passing, and tests detected multiple viruses including rhinovirus/enterovirus, human adenovirus, human bocavirus, and COVID-19.
