TULSA, Okla. — The City of Tulsa celebrated the 100 year anniversary of the Spavinaw Water Project bringing clean, high-quality water to Tulsa.
“This is something that I have been talking about—this project—for all the eight years that I’ve been mayor because to me it is the quintessential example of what we aspire to be as a city,” said Mayor G.T. Bynum.
Bynum spoke about the importance of the water project, both 100 years ago and today.
“Tulsans in the early 1920s decided we’re going to build this marvel of city engineering that was such a big deal when it opened that President Calvin Coolidge pressed a button in the White House that opened the tap here in Tulsa for the first water to flow out of the Spavinaw water line. It was national news and to this day now, 100 years later as of tomorrow, we are still relying on the foresight and the vision and the ambition of that generation of Tulsans and benefitting from it.”
Bynum said this anniversary isn’t just about honoring those who came before us, but living up to their ambition today.
