Tulsa safety ordinance would limit panhandling from many medians

The Tulsa City Council is considering new restrictions on panhandling from medians, in an effort to improve safety, according to District 8 Councilor Phil Lakin.

The proposal would bar anyone from remaining in a median, within 18” of traffic, for more than the time it takes to cross the road.

What prompted the proposed change?

The resolution supporting the ordinance notes recent crashes at intersections and continuing problems with drivers running over signs on medians, where people often stand when panhandling.

What medians or roads would be affected?

The ordinance applies to medians 10’ or less wide, where traffic speed limits are 25 miles an hour or greater. Most streets surrounding Tulsa intersections have 40 mph speed limits.
