Tulsa’s Operation SAFE faces criticism over lack of shelter for homeless

TULSA, OKLA. (KTUL) — As Operation SAFE enters its fifth day, concerns are mounting over the initiative’s impact on Tulsa’s homeless community. Governor Kevin Stitt has presented the unhoused with two choices: accept transportation to a shelter or treatment facility, or face jail time. However, members of the homeless community argue that limited shelter leaves them with few viable options.

Skielar Grayson, who has experienced homelessness in Tulsa for years, said, “We’re just out here trying to survive. We are struggling. We can’t help being homeless; we are trying our best.”

Grayson and Kat Deann, another long-term member of the homeless community, highlighted the lack of available shelter space. “Put us more resources out here,” Deann said. “Put the Mental Health Association, family children, put them more resources to put them into places. They have brought my life completely to a turnaround. But they can’t put me in a house that ain’t there.”…
