Caring for 34 years: Tulsa mother speaks out about caregiver fatigue

Caring for a loved one with disabilities can be both rewarding and exhausting. For Angela Walker, it has been her reality for 34 years.

Walker’s daughter, Courtney, was born with a 2Q chromosome deletion, a condition that causes intellectual disability and developmental delays. Courtney does not walk or talk, uses a feeding tube every four hours and wears diapers.

“She’s on a baby’s schedule,” Walker said. “When a baby sleeps, you sleep. That’s what I do because I feed her every four hours. It’s like taking care of a baby for 34 years. I love Courtney so much, but if you don’t take care of yourself, how can I take care of her?”…
