Rep. Ellen Pogemiller Tackles Chronic Absenteeism in Oklahoma Schools, Advocates Multifaceted Approach

Rep. Ellen Pogemiller, D-Oklahoma City, is addressing the issue of chronic absenteeism in schools through a study presented to the Common Education Committee. Chronic absenteeism is defined as missing 10% or more of school days, but Pogemiller’s research highlights that the problem often stems from challenges outside the classroom. She noted that many of the issues affecting attendance originate from factors beyond school control, as per the Oklahoma House of Representatives release.

In Tulsa Public Schools, data from Impact Tulsa shows that more than 2,000 students face housing instability, with the highest impact seen among Pre-K and Kindergarten students. These disruptions contribute significantly to chronic absenteeism.

To address this, several districts are implementing collaborative efforts. Moore Public Schools has partnered with Bridges of Moore to provide housing and life skills support for homeless students. A new housing project for 20 additional students is planned for completion in Fall 2026…
