Light reflections: A Q&A with acclaimed cinematographer Roger Deakins and James Deakins ahead of their visit to Tulsa

Academy Award-winning cinematographer Sir Roger Deakins and his creative partner James Deakins are coming to Tulsa for a series of public programs beginning Feb. 24. Among other art and film-related topics, events will reflect on the acclaimed cinematographer’s iconic career — which includes films such as “O Brother, Where Art Thou,” “The Shawshank Redemption,” “Blade Runner 2049” and “1917.”

Culminating in an Artists Reception opening event of Deakins’ new photography exhibition “Still Light” at The Hulett Collection (1311 E. 15th St.) Feb. 28, the “Team Deakins” duo will also be present at Magic City Books Feb. 24 for a signing and discussion of Deakins’ new book, “Reflections: On Cinematography.” Additional panel discussions and conversations across Tulsa will take place at Holland Hall (first come, first served event at 6 p.m. on Feb. 26), The University of Tulsa (an event co-sponsored by Tulsa Film Collective) and Circle Cinema (please note: some events have sold out, though further tickets may come available).

Meeting on a set in the early ’90s, the Deakins have worked together closely on filming projects since then, even starting the Team Deakins podcast in 2020 to keep the conversation going about cinematography and other film-related subjects…
