Longtime tribal councilor Buel Anglen dies at 76

SPERRY, Okla. – Longtime former Tribal Councilor Buel Anglen died on Feb. 14 at the age of 76. He served the Cherokee Nation for nearly three decades, 15 years as a member of the tribe’s legislative body.

He was born on Dec. 14, 1949, in Tulsa to Leon George Anglen and Annabelle (Juby) Anglen. He passed away in Sperry with his family by his side.

“With respect and gratitude, we honor the life of Buel Anglen who dedicated 15 years as a Cherokee Nation Tribal Councilor and for the betterment of our people. Throughout his tenure, Buel exemplified the Cherokee values of service before self, respect for community, and responsibility to future generations,” Principal Chief Chuck Hoskin Jr. said in a statement. “He worked to strengthen programs that served Cherokee families and support initiatives that uplifted our citizens across all districts. Buel’s presence on the council … helped guide the body’s decision making and action in support of education, healthcare, human services and access to increased opportunities for Cherokee Nation citizens.”

Anglen’s family added he “lived a life defined by perseverance, integrity, and an unwavering commitment to family, community and service. For all 76 years of his life, he called Sperry home – not simply as a place to live, but as a place to build, serve and invest in others.”…
