Tulsa time warp: Sinclair Service Station

Kansas pharmacist turned oilman Harry F. Sinclair arrived in Tulsa in 1912 to be closer to the Oklahoma oil fields on which he held leases. He grew his wealth over the following years and, by 1916, formed the Sinclair Oil and Refining Corporation.

During the 1930s, the Sinclair brand flourished thanks to the successful advertising campaign of “Dino” the large green dinosaur, as well as the development of fully branded Sinclair service stations that soon crisscrossed the country.

In 1939, one of these service stations opened along Route 66 near South Jamestown Avenue on the residential outskirts of Tulsa. It was considered a “master” or “super” service station, which provided drivers full service options such as refueling, fluid checks, tire, tube and engine maintenance, and even a car wash by attendants…
