Veteran police dog Officer Recon retires from Gresham force

Gresham’s longest serving police dogs has formally retired after a long career of catching bad guys and supporting his human colleagues.

On Monday, Jan. 29, the Gresham Police Department honored K9 Recon, who first joined the force in the spring of 2015. His last shift was last fall.

Recon served with two handlers during his tenure. First with Officer Jason Justus, and then with Officer Jarred Hansen. In 2017 he became a dual-purpose dog, used in both patrol operations and narcotics detection. Alongside his handlers, Recon protected and served the community and surrounding areas, capturing suspects and helping ensure safety. Recon assisted with more than 140 captures and more than 500 surrenders.

Now he can enjoy a well-earned retirement. He will be staying within the Gresham Police family, after being adopted by Officer Ralph Godfrey and his family.

A new police dog has already begun her training. Leni is a 2-year-old German shepherd who has been partnered with Hansen. She will be certified for patrol work by March.
