First phase of PDX airport improvements open in May

PORTLAND, Ore. ( KOIN ) — The first phase of Portland International Airport renovations will open to the public in May, the Port of Portland announced.

Travelers will be able to enjoy new and improved amenities, including more appearances of that iconic carpet. The redesigned main terminal will feature live trees, natural skylights and a locally sourced roof made of Douglas fir. In addition, a passageway connecting all four concourses will also make a return.

There will also be new local shops and restaurants and streamlined security checkpoints. That includes a brand new pre-security Market Hall and two new security stations.

Gateway North will be Portland’s first new MAX station in 9 years

On the same day, Phase 1 opens to the public, Phase 2 construction will commence and remain active until the end of 2025. This alternating construction focus will shut down the current security checkpoints and lobbies, rerouting them to other areas.

Phase 2 is expected to be completed in December 2025 and will include improvements such as the additions of permanent exit lanes, even more local restaurants and PDX’s first batch of all-user restrooms.
