Candidate Q&A: St. Helens mayoral candidates on tourism, the budget and more

The race for mayor is on in St. Helens.

In addition to five candidate vying for two positions on the council, the two-year term for mayor is on the November ballot. Candidates include incumbent Rick Scholl and challengers Jennifer Massey and Steven Toschi.

With ballots sent out Oct. 16 — just over two weeks before the Nov. 5 election — we asked the candidates for their thoughts on important issues affecting St. Helens residents. Their responses are published in full below. Scholl did not respond to the questions by the deadline.

What experience and background can you bring to the St. Helens City Council as mayor?

Jennifer Massey, St. Helens mayor candidate: As a candidate for mayor of St. Helens, I bring 20 years of experience in risk management and executive roles across various industries, 18 years of business experience managing multiple locations in two states, and 25 years as a union steamfitter. I offer strong leadership, decisive decision making, problem solving, strategic planning, financial expertise, industry experience, team-building skills and a commitment to transparency and community advocacy. I don’t rely on excuses; I focus on planning, benchmarking, evaluations and finding solutions.
