Portland man, 85, rescued after getting lost on hike in Skamania County

PORTLAND, Ore. ( KOIN ) — An 85-year-old man from Portland was rescued from Wind Mountain in Skamania County during the early morning hours of Oct. 24.

The Skamania County Sheriff’s Office Search and Rescue team received a report of a missing hiker at approximately 11:18 p.m. after the man failed to return home Wednesday night. An on-duty Skamania County Deputy located the missing man’s vehicle at the Wind Mountain Trailhead and volunteers organized to search for the missing man.

“At approximately 1:21 a.m., volunteers from the Skamania County Sheriff’s Office Search and Rescue Team located the hiker who was approximately 75 feet off the trail,” the Skamania County Sheriff’s Office wrote on social media. “Based on the rugged terrain, a rope rescue team was requested.”

Rescuers with Skamania County Emergency Medical Services, the Klickitat County Sheriff’s Office Search and Rescue team, Skamania County Fire District 1 and Skamania County Fire District 2 all responded to help rescue the man from the frigid mountainside. After an hours-long effort, the stranded hiker was hoisted back onto the trail at 7:14 a.m. and taken to the hospital for treatment.
