Boeing announces layoffs for thousands of workers in Oregon, Washington

PORTLAND, Ore. ( KOIN ) – Boeing issued a layoff notice on Monday, announcing plans to let go of more than 2,000 employees in the Pacific Northwest.

The layoffs include 50 employees in Portland, according to the layoff notice under the Worker Adjustment and Retraining Notification Act.

In a letter dated Nov. 15 to Oregon Rapid Response Coordinator Michael Welter, the aerospace giant said “the Boeing Company has made the difficult decision to reduce its workforce. This decision is expected to result in the permanent layoff of approximately 50 employees at the company’s Oregon location.”

According to the notice, layoffs are expected to begin Jan. 17, 2025, for most employees — noting six of the impacted employees are union-represented.

The Portland workers are not alone. Boeing also filed a notice with Washington’s Employment Security Department on Monday, announcing 2,199 workers were laid off in the state, among a total of 17,000 job cuts companywide, as reported by the Associated Press .
