It’s official: Trader Joe’s is coming to Gresham

It’s finally happening.

After decades of dreaming, and countless meetings and pitches by city of Gresham leadership, Trader Joe’s is coming to East Multnomah County.

The specialty grocer has filed for a commercial permit to take over the currently vacant business at 2083 N.E. Burnside Road in Gresham. That space is the former Big Lots in the Oregon Trail Center. Part of the application includes improvements to the building, including interior partitions, a new ceiling, restrooms and loading dock.

The application was made on Dec. 23. It is unknown how long it will take to get everything up and running.

Trader Joe’s is headquartered in Monrovia, California, and has more than 595 locations across the Country. Named after Joe Coulombe, the store has grown from its humble beginnings in 1958 to become a popular grocery destination.

Many of the most popular offerings are sold under the “Trader Joe’s” private label — chili & lime flavored corn tortilla chips; mandarin orange chicken; dark chocolate peanut butter cups; everything but the bagel seasoning; and “Two Buck Chuck” wines.
