History Connection: The local girl selected runner-up for Life Magazine cover in 1948

Raised on a farm in Oregon City, Marcia (pronounced mar-see-uh) Schrump, daughter of Vera and Clay Schrump, graduated from a local high school and didn’t stray too far from home to attend college. She graduated from Oregon State with a Bachelor of Science degree then left Oregon and headed to Ithaca, New York to pursue a master’s degree at Cornell. While researching her thesis, she interviewed for a job with American Viscose Corporation, manufacturer of rayon and other synthetic fibers, in New York City.
