ACLU asks Portland leaders to investigate PPB’s ‘intimidation and retaliation’ tactics

PORTLAND, Ore. ( KOIN ) — The American Civil Liberties Union’s Oregon chapter has led a coalition of organizations in signing a letter that asks Portland leaders to investigate law enforcement’s alleged “intimidation and retaliation” tactics.

The ACLU — along with 16 other groups including Basic Rights Oregon, Don’t Shoot PDX and the local Urban League chapter — sent the letter to Portland City Council, Mayor Keith Wilson, Portland Police Bureau Chief Bob Day and other officials on Wednesday.

According to the collective, some PPB officers have attempted to intimidate the new city councilors who have pushed for police accountability.

The letter said uniformed officers attended town halls organized by District 2 Councilor Sameer Kanal and District 3 Councilor Angelita Morillo on two different occasions last month. Signees claimed the officers failed to communicate their appearance ahead of the meetings and, when Morillo asked about their attendance, they either “appeared to evade explaining their presence” or they decided against naming the lieutenant that advised them to go…
