‘Almost breathless’: Portland Catholics react to first American pope

PORTLAND, Ore. — Thursday, white smoke rose from the Sistine Chapel, indicating that a new pope had been chosen. Soon after, American-born Cardinal Robert Francis Prevost emerged, who chose the name Pope Leo XIV.
