Dangerous algae blooms at Lacamas Lake prompt public health advisory

PORTLAND, Ore. (KOIN) — Dangerous toxin levels have been detected in Lacamas Lake, leading to a Clark County Public Health advisory against spending time in the water.

The presence of cyanotoxins — harmful byproducts of cyanobacterial blooms found in various species of algae — were first reported Wednesday, June 4.

Side effects from these toxins can range from mild stomach pain to life-threatening conditions and can be especially harmful to young children or small pets.

Clark County Public Health says it will continue to update the community on the changing conditions at Lacamas Lake. Until it is confirmed to be safe, Public Health advises against skin contact with as well as ingestion of the lake’s water. This recommendation also extends to pets…
