PORTLAND, Ore. (KATU) — It’s the debate we’ve been hearing for years, and it hinges on one simple question, how much should we fund the police?
That question is becoming more pronounced again, as the City Council hears from the public about its plan to divert roughly $2 million out of the police budget and into Parks and Recreation. While this is a diversion of funding, the Portland Police Bureau is still receiving an increase in funding from last year.
However, a newly released Portland police budget report, which was prepared by the City Budget Office and the Portland Police Bureau, says that the police bureau would actually be seeing a cut to funding, in spite of technically receiving more funding.
